Monumental Graffiti Book Launch / Exhibition

CAMDEN ART CENTRE, LONDON
OCTOBER 24 2024 - OCOTBER 27 2024

To celebrate the launch of MONUMENTAL GRAFFITI, Camden Art Centre and author Rafael Schacter present a selection of artworks and a video programme in the Artists' Studio. The display showcases artists featured in the publication MONUMENTAL GRAFFITI, which was launched at Camden Art Centre on 23 October, with the premiere performance of A406 by 10Foot, a spoken word piece written and directed by 10Foot and performed by actor Ed Skrein.

The works will be on display in the Artists’ Studio from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 October.

Duncan Weston’s diptych The Bible (Front and Back Cover) is a loose, expressionistic reproduction of the iconic graffiti book Subway Art by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. Weston’s work highlights the book’s pivotal role in graffiti culture while capturing the energy and movement inherent in the original images.

Alexander Bavards installation Bulky—Study of the Body in Space is part of a larger performance that explores the physical act of graffiti writing. As seen in his video SLOWMOMOBulky re-presents the dynamic motions that create graffiti’s “shadow dance.”

Wermke/Leinkauf’s piece Die neonorangene Kuh (The Neon-Orange Cow) evokes awe and wonder, challenging viewers to consider if they too could perform such nearly inconceivable acts.

Brad Downey’s Buffer highlights the fleeting nature of graffiti by showing its removal moments after it is created. The work reflects graffiti’s impermanence, a core aspect of the culture.

Christian Falsnaes’ Love & Security, produced in collaboration with A.activities, captures the exhilaration of creating art in public spaces. The film shows an Anthropometry-style painting using a Viennese subway train as the canvas, where action and pleasure overcome fear and vulnerability.

Matthias Wermke’s ohne Titel (Marseille) sees the city as a playground, emphasising the physical skills developed through graffiti writing, set against the backdrop of Marseille’s striking architecture.

FATZOO’s VAN2MTL EAZTBOUND documents a journey across Canada, showcasing graffiti as not only an art form but also a means of exploration and experiencing the world.
